Your Cycle Details
The day your most recent period started (cycle day 1)
Count from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Average is 28 days.
How many days your bleeding usually lasts.
How ovulation is found
Ovulation happens about 14 days before your next period. The 6-day fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation (sperm survive that long) plus ovulation day itself.

The Phases of Your Cycle
Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5)
Your period. The uterine lining sheds. Day 1 is the first day of full flow and marks the start of a new cycle.
Follicular & Fertile Phase (Days 6–14)
Follicles mature and oestrogen rises. The fertile window opens about 5 days before ovulation — the best time to conceive.
Ovulation (≈ Day 14)
A mature egg is released and survives 12–24 hours. This is your peak fertility day.
Luteal Phase (Days 15–28)
Lasts about 14 days. If the egg is not fertilised, hormone levels drop and the next period begins.
Tips to Improve Your Chances
- →Time intercourse — aim for every 1–2 days through the fertile window, especially the 2 days before ovulation.
- →Track your cycle — note the start date each month so your average cycle length stays accurate.
- →Watch for signs — clear, stretchy cervical mucus and a slight rise in basal body temperature signal ovulation.
- →Start folic acid early — 400mcg/day before conception helps prevent neural tube defects.
- →See a doctor — if you are under 35 and have tried for a year (or 6 months if over 35), consult a fertility specialist.
How Ovulation Is Calculated
The luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period) is fairly constant at about 14 days. So ovulation is found by working back from your next expected period:
Ovulation = Next period − 14 days
Fertile window = Ovulation − 5 days … Ovulation
Example
Last period 1 Jan, 28-day cycle → next period 29 Jan → ovulation 15 Jan → fertile window 10–15 Jan.
Better Ways to Confirm Ovulation
- →Ovulation predictor kits (LH strips) — detect the luteinising hormone surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.
- →Basal body temperature — a small sustained rise (~0.3–0.5°C) confirms ovulation has happened.
- →Cervical mucus — becomes clear, slippery and stretchy (like egg white) around the fertile window.
- →Ultrasound (follicular study) — your doctor can track follicle growth for the most precise timing.
