Your Cycle Details

The day your most recent period started (cycle day 1)

28 days

Count from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Average is 28 days.

5 days

How many days your bleeding usually lasts.

How ovulation is found

Ovulation happens about 14 days before your next period. The 6-day fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation (sperm survive that long) plus ovulation day itself.

The Phases of Your Cycle

Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5)

Your period. The uterine lining sheds. Day 1 is the first day of full flow and marks the start of a new cycle.

Follicular & Fertile Phase (Days 6–14)

Follicles mature and oestrogen rises. The fertile window opens about 5 days before ovulation — the best time to conceive.

Ovulation (≈ Day 14)

A mature egg is released and survives 12–24 hours. This is your peak fertility day.

Luteal Phase (Days 15–28)

Lasts about 14 days. If the egg is not fertilised, hormone levels drop and the next period begins.

Tips to Improve Your Chances

  • Time intercourse — aim for every 1–2 days through the fertile window, especially the 2 days before ovulation.
  • Track your cycle — note the start date each month so your average cycle length stays accurate.
  • Watch for signs — clear, stretchy cervical mucus and a slight rise in basal body temperature signal ovulation.
  • Start folic acid early — 400mcg/day before conception helps prevent neural tube defects.
  • See a doctor — if you are under 35 and have tried for a year (or 6 months if over 35), consult a fertility specialist.

How Ovulation Is Calculated

The luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period) is fairly constant at about 14 days. So ovulation is found by working back from your next expected period:

Next period = Last period + cycle length
Ovulation = Next period − 14 days
Fertile window = Ovulation − 5 days … Ovulation

Example

Last period 1 Jan, 28-day cycle → next period 29 Jan → ovulation 15 Jan → fertile window 10–15 Jan.

Better Ways to Confirm Ovulation

  • Ovulation predictor kits (LH strips) — detect the luteinising hormone surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.
  • Basal body temperature — a small sustained rise (~0.3–0.5°C) confirms ovulation has happened.
  • Cervical mucus — becomes clear, slippery and stretchy (like egg white) around the fertile window.
  • Ultrasound (follicular study) — your doctor can track follicle growth for the most precise timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ovulation and fertile days

How does an ovulation calculator work?
It estimates ovulation by counting back about 14 days from your next expected period. With a 28-day cycle, ovulation falls around day 14; with a 30-day cycle, around day 16. The calculator adds your cycle length to the first day of your last period to find the next period, then subtracts 14 days to find ovulation and highlights the 6-day fertile window leading up to it.
What are the most fertile days to get pregnant?
Your most fertile days are the day of ovulation and the 2 days before it. Sperm can survive up to 5 days inside the body, so the full fertile window is about 6 days — the 5 days before ovulation plus the day itself. Trying every 1–2 days during this window gives the best chance of conception.
Can I rely on the calculator for natural birth control?
No. Calendar-based prediction is not a reliable contraceptive method because ovulation timing varies, especially with irregular cycles, stress, illness or travel. If you are avoiding pregnancy, use a proven contraceptive method and consult a doctor.
Why does ovulation change if my cycle is not 28 days?
The second half of the cycle (the luteal phase) is fairly constant at about 14 days for most women, so ovulation is counted back 14 days from the next period. A longer cycle pushes ovulation later (day 16 for a 30-day cycle), and a shorter cycle pulls it earlier (day 12 for a 26-day cycle).
When should I take a pregnancy test?
For the most accurate result, test on or just after the day your next period is due — about 14 days after ovulation. Testing too early can give a false negative because hCG levels are still low. If the first test is negative but your period does not arrive, retest after 2–3 days.
How accurate is calendar-based ovulation prediction?
It is a good guide for women with regular cycles but only an estimate. For more precision, track ovulation with basal body temperature charting, ovulation predictor kits (LH strips), or cervical mucus changes. Combining methods gives the clearest picture of your fertile window.
Can I get pregnant outside my fertile window?
It is unlikely but not impossible. Cycles vary and ovulation can happen earlier or later than predicted, and sperm can survive several days. The calculator shows the most likely fertile days, but it cannot rule out conception entirely on other days.
What is the difference between ovulation and the fertile window?
Ovulation is the single day the ovary releases an egg. The fertile window is the wider span of about 6 days during which intercourse can lead to pregnancy — the 5 days before ovulation (because sperm survive) plus ovulation day. The egg itself only lives 12–24 hours.
