How it's worked out

Conception happens at ovulation — about 266 days before the due date, or ~14 days after your last period. Because ovulation timing varies, a few-day window is shown.

Good to Know

  • The egg lives only 12–24 hours, but sperm survive up to 5 days — so conception may follow intercourse from several earlier days.
  • This is an estimate and cannot determine paternity or a single day of conception.
  • An early dating ultrasound is the most accurate way to confirm conception timing.

From Conception to Birth

Conception (Day 0)

Sperm fertilises the egg in the fallopian tube, at or just after ovulation.

Implantation (Day 6–12)

The fertilised egg attaches to the uterine lining and hCG production begins.

Positive Test (Day 12–16)

hCG is high enough to detect — around the time your next period is due.

Birth (≈ Day 266)

About 38 weeks after conception, or 40 weeks from your last period.

How Conception Date Is Calculated

The calculator reverses the standard pregnancy dating maths, depending on which date you know:

From due date:  Conception = Due date − 266 days
From last period: Conception = LMP + (cycle − 14)
From birth date:  Conception ≈ Birth date − 266 days

Example

Due date 8 Oct → conception ≈ 15 Jan (8 Oct − 266 days), with a likely window of 12–18 Jan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about conception dates

How is the conception date calculated?
Conception happens at ovulation, about 14 days after the first day of your last period and roughly 266 days (38 weeks) before your due date. So from a due date the calculator subtracts 266 days; from your last period it adds about 14 days; from a birth date it subtracts about 266 days. Because exact ovulation timing varies, the result is shown as a window of a few days rather than a single date.
How accurate is a conception date calculator?
It gives a close estimate, not an exact day. Conception can only happen during the fertile window, and ovulation may occur a few days earlier or later than day 14, especially with irregular cycles. An early dating ultrasound is the most reliable way to estimate conception, usually accurate to within about 5 days.
Can this calculator tell me exactly which day I conceived?
No. It estimates the most likely conception date and a surrounding window. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so intercourse on several different days could have led to the same conception. The calculator cannot pinpoint a single act of intercourse or determine paternity.
What is the difference between conception and implantation?
Conception (fertilisation) is when sperm meets egg, around ovulation. Implantation is when the fertilised egg attaches to the uterine lining, typically 6–12 days after conception. A pregnancy test only turns positive after implantation, when the hormone hCG begins to rise.
Why does conception happen about 2 weeks after my period?
In an average 28-day cycle, ovulation — and therefore conception — occurs around day 14, roughly two weeks after the first day of your period. This is why pregnancy dated from the last period (40 weeks) is about 2 weeks longer than the actual age of the baby (38 weeks).
Can I find my conception date from my baby's birth date?
Yes, approximately. Switch to the birth-date mode and the calculator works back about 266 days (38 weeks) from the birth date. If your baby was born early or late, the actual conception date shifts accordingly, so treat the result as an estimate.
