How Age Is Calculated

Your exact age is the gap between your date of birth and a chosen date, broken into years, then months, then days. The calculation respects the real length of each month (28–31 days) and leap years, so it is more accurate than simply subtracting years.

In India, official forms almost always use completed years — the age you turned at your last birthday, not your nearest birthday.

How is exact age calculated?

Age is calculated by finding the difference between the date of birth and today (or a specified date). Years are counted first, then remaining months, then remaining days. Importantly, the day count accounts for the varying lengths of months — a month of February has 28 or 29 days, not 30.

What is the legal age of majority in India?

In India, the legal age of majority is 18 years as per the Indian Majority Act. The legal age for marriage is 18 for women and 21 for men (proposed to be raised to 21 for both). The voting age is 18. The age for criminal liability is 18. Senior citizen benefits apply from age 60.

How are leap years handled in age calculation?

A leap year has 366 days (February has 29 days). If you were born on Feb 29, your birthday is celebrated on Feb 28 or Mar 1 in non-leap years (varies by country/person preference). Our calculator uses Feb 28 as the birthday in non-leap years for Feb 29 births. A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years must be divisible by 400.

What is the difference between age and completed years?

"Completed years" is the age you reached at your last birthday — the figure almost every Indian form and law uses. So someone who is 24 years and 11 months is officially "24", not 25. This calculator reports completed years plus the leftover months and days.
