Ideal Weight Formulas Explained

BMI-based (Indian Standard)

Range = 18.5–22.9 × height_m²

Most relevant for Indians/South Asians. Asian thresholds endorsed by ICMR.

Devine Formula (1974) — Medical standard

Male: 50 + 2.3 × (in−60)   Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (in−60)

Widely used in clinical drug dosing. Reference is 5 feet = base weight.

Hamwi Formula (1964)

Male: 48 + 2.7 × (in−60)   Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (in−60)

Robinson (1983) & Miller (1983)

Robinson M: 52 + 1.9 × (in−60)   F: 49 + 1.7 × (in−60)

Miller M: 56.2 + 1.41 × (in−60)   F: 53.1 + 1.36 × (in−60)

Why Ideal Weight Differs by Formula

Each formula was developed for different purposes and populations, which is why they give slightly different results. The Devine formula was originally designed to calculate drug dosing in clinical settings — it's widely used in hospitals but wasn't meant as a general health target.

The BMI-based range (18.5–22.9 for Indians) is more broadly applicable and accounts for the fact that South Asians carry more visceral fat at lower BMIs. Indian researchers recommend aiming for a BMI of 21–22, not the WHO upper limit of 24.9.

Key insight: All formulas give a range. You don't need to hit an exact number — aim to be within any of the formula's outputs. Muscle mass, bone structure and frame size all affect what a healthy weight looks like for you specifically.

Tips to Reach Your Ideal Weight

  • Calculate your TDEE first — use our Calorie Calculator to find your maintenance calories, then eat 300–500 kcal below it for gradual, sustainable loss.
  • Focus on protein — eating 1.6–2g protein per kg helps preserve muscle while losing fat, ensuring the weight you lose is fat, not muscle.
  • Aim for 0.5 kg/week loss — slow and steady produces better body composition than crash dieting. 0.5 kg/week = 6 kg in 3 months, sustainably.
  • Include resistance training — building muscle raises your BMR, making weight maintenance easier long-term even while eating at normal levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ideal body weight for Indians

What is the ideal weight for a 5'7" Indian male?
For a 5'7" (170 cm) Indian male: BMI-based ideal range is 53.5–66.1 kg (BMI 18.5–22.9). Mid-point target: ~60 kg. Devine formula gives 66.7 kg; Hamwi gives 67.5 kg. The BMI-based range is more appropriate for Indians since the Devine/Hamwi formulas were developed for Western populations and tend to give slightly higher targets.
What is the ideal weight for a 5'3" Indian female?
For a 5'3" (160 cm) Indian female: BMI-based ideal range is 47.4–58.6 kg (BMI 18.5–22.9). Mid-point target: ~53 kg. Devine formula gives 54.0 kg; Robinson gives 54.2 kg. All formulas converge around 50–58 kg for this height, making this a reliable target range.
Why do formulas give different ideal weights?
Each formula was developed at different times, using different populations and for different purposes. The Devine formula (1974) was for drug dosing in hospitals. Hamwi (1964) was for dietetics. Robinson and Miller (1983) were population refinements. None were designed as universal health benchmarks. For Indians, the BMI-based range (18.5–22.9) is most applicable since it was calibrated for Asian body composition.
Does ideal weight change with age?
The formulas don't account for age, but body composition changes with it. After 30, muscle mass decreases by ~1% per year (sarcopenia) while fat tends to accumulate. This means you can be at the same weight as your 20s but with more fat and less muscle. For those over 50, a slightly higher BMI (23–24) may actually be protective — some studies show underweight in elderly is more dangerous than mild overweight.
Is ideal weight the same for male and female?
The BMI-based range is identical for male and female at the same height. However, the clinical formulas (Devine, Hamwi, Robinson, Miller) give different base weights for males and females — males start at a higher base weight because they have more bone and muscle mass on average. For example, at 5'7" (170cm): Devine gives 66.7 kg for males vs 61.2 kg for females.
How long does it take to reach ideal weight?
At a healthy rate of 0.5 kg/week loss: 5 kg takes ~10 weeks; 10 kg takes ~20 weeks (5 months); 15 kg takes ~7 months. Sustainable weight loss is 0.5–1 kg/week. Going faster usually causes muscle loss and is hard to maintain. The key metric isn't speed but whether the changes are sustainable — a 12-month transformation that sticks beats a 3-month crash that rebounds.
