BMI-based (Indian Standard)
Range = 18.5–22.9 × height_m²

Devine Formula (1974) — Medical standard
Male: 50 + 2.3 × (in−60) Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (in−60)
Widely used in clinical drug dosing. Reference is 5 feet = base weight.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
Male: 48 + 2.7 × (in−60) Female: 45.5 + 2.2 × (in−60)
Robinson (1983) & Miller (1983)
Robinson M: 52 + 1.9 × (in−60) F: 49 + 1.7 × (in−60)
Miller M: 56.2 + 1.41 × (in−60) F: 53.1 + 1.36 × (in−60)
Why Ideal Weight Differs by Formula
Each formula was developed for different purposes and populations, which is why they give slightly different results. The Devine formula was originally designed to calculate drug dosing in clinical settings — it's widely used in hospitals but wasn't meant as a general health target.
The BMI-based range (18.5–22.9 for Indians) is more broadly applicable and accounts for the fact that South Asians carry more visceral fat at lower BMIs. Indian researchers recommend aiming for a BMI of 21–22, not the WHO upper limit of 24.9.
Key insight: All formulas give a range. You don't need to hit an exact number — aim to be within any of the formula's outputs. Muscle mass, bone structure and frame size all affect what a healthy weight looks like for you specifically.
Tips to Reach Your Ideal Weight
- →Calculate your TDEE first — use our Calorie Calculator to find your maintenance calories, then eat 300–500 kcal below it for gradual, sustainable loss.
- →Focus on protein — eating 1.6–2g protein per kg helps preserve muscle while losing fat, ensuring the weight you lose is fat, not muscle.
- →Aim for 0.5 kg/week loss — slow and steady produces better body composition than crash dieting. 0.5 kg/week = 6 kg in 3 months, sustainably.
- →Include resistance training — building muscle raises your BMR, making weight maintenance easier long-term even while eating at normal levels.
