What Is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a grading metric used by CBSE and most Indian universities to summarise academic performance on a 10-point scale instead of raw percentages. Because many jobs, scholarships and higher-study applications still ask for a percentage, students frequently need to convert their CGPA into a percentage and sometimes the other way round.

Worked Example

Suppose your CBSE Class 10 CGPA is 8.2. Using the official CBSE formula, Percentage = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. To go back, 77.9 ÷ 9.5 = 8.2 CGPA. If your university uses a different multiplier (say it multiplies by 10), set the custom factor above and the result updates instantly.

Why It's Useful

  • Fill job and college application forms that demand a percentage.
  • Compare your score against percentage-based eligibility cut-offs.
  • Convert back and forth without remembering the formula.
  • Handle non-CBSE boards by setting your own multiplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common CGPA and percentage conversion questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by the conversion multiplier. For CBSE the official formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Example: a CGPA of 8.2 = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. Many universities use a different multiplier, so check your institution's rule.
What is the CBSE CGPA to percentage formula?
CBSE uses Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This applies to the overall CGPA across the five main subjects. For a single subject, multiply that subject's grade point by 9.5 to get the indicative subject-wise percentage.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Divide your percentage by the multiplier. With the CBSE factor: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. Example: 76% = 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA.
Is the 9.5 multiplier the same for every board and university?
No. 9.5 is the CBSE convention. Universities such as Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University and Delhi University use their own formulas (some subtract a constant before multiplying by 10). Always use your institution's official formula — this tool lets you set a custom multiplier.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your grade average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average across all completed semesters. You convert CGPA to percentage the same way once you have the cumulative figure.
